Truth Telling at Wybalenna

Wybalenna is internationally significant. It is a site of genocide, and it is a sacred place for the Tasmanian Aboriginal community. We have an opportunity to properly and fully realise Truth-telling at Wybalenna.

ALCT is undertaking work at Wybalenna to upgrade buildings and establish it as a place for truth-telling. Starting in early 2023 with the restoration of the old shearing shed by a crew of volunteers, there has since been a massive effort to refurbish the homestead kitchen and living room, install ablutions by the shed, install new water tanks and refresh the interpretation in the chapel.

Community are gathering at Wybalenna, meet and spend time on Country and in July 2025, the Aboriginal flag was raised at Wybalenna to celebrate NAIDOC Week.

Truth Telling exhibition

ALCT is proud to launch a new truth-telling interpretation, developed by Palawa and Warlpiri creative Nunami Sculthorpe-Green.

Visitors are welcome to visit the Chapel to immerse themselves in our story and share their reflections. An audio tour has been developed to support the installation as people move through the space, or listen from afar on our website.

Our Work

With less than 1% of Tasmania's landmass returned as Aboriginal land, everyone knows that more needs to be done.

Giving Land Back is our invitation for your support, to help return private freehold land into Aboriginal ownership.
