The Aboriginal Land Council of Tasmania (ALCT) has welcomed the Federal Government’s announcement that it will divest several Department of Defence properties in Lutruwita/Tasmania, describing it as a significant opportunity to restore land justice for Palawa.
One of the properties identified holds deep cultural, historical, and ongoing significance for the Palawa/Tasmanian Aboriginal Community. For nearly 100 years, Palawa have maintained access to this site for cultural birding practices, including monitoring and caring for the mutton bird rookery.
“This is a living cultural landscape,” said Greg Brown, Chair of the ALCT. “Our connection to this place has never been broken. Despite the impacts of invasion and dispossession, Palawa have worked with the Federal Government to continue to care for Country and the mutton birds that return here each year.”
ALCT is seeking the full return of the rookery area at Fort Direction, with guaranteed and practical access through the adjoining barracks. Returning this land would protect an irreplaceable cultural site and ensure that future generations of Palawa can continue cultural practices that sustain both community and Country.
“Land return is not symbolic. It is a practical step towards restoring land justice and providing real outcomes for future generations,” Mr Brown said. “Palawa cultural knowledge systems have protected our cultural practices for thousands of years. Supporting Palawa-led stewardship strengthens biodiversity, cultural continuity and wellbeing.”
The divestment of Commonwealth land presents a rare opportunity for the Federal Government to take meaningful action toward Closing the Gap in Lutruwita by recognising Palawa rights, authority and responsibility as the First Peoples of this Country.
“The return of culturally significant land is one of the most tangible ways governments can address the legacy of dispossession,” said Mr Brown. “This is an opportunity for the Federal Government to walk alongside Palawa and deliver lasting justice for Country and community.”
ALCT looks forward to working constructively with the Federal Government to progress land return outcomes that honour culture, strengthen community and care for Country.
